Frequently Asked Questions
What does a coaching session look like?
Coaching sessions are typically conducted one-on-one, though small group sessions can be used when appropriate. Sessions are generally one hour in length and often occur twice per month, with engagements typically lasting several months depending on the client’s goals.
Each session focuses on real-time challenges, decision-making, and leadership development. Clients leave with clear action steps, and progress is supported through ongoing accountability. The intent is not just discussion, but consistent forward movement between sessions.
What is required of the client?
Clients are expected to be engaged, thoughtful, and open throughout the process. This includes a willingness to discuss real challenges, consider different perspectives, and participate actively in each session.
Just as important, clients should be prepared to follow through on agreed-upon actions. Progress depends on a commitment to implementing decisions and applying what is discussed between sessions.
Is my coaching session confidential?
Yes. All coaching sessions and their content are kept confidential.
The only exceptions would involve situations where disclosure is required by law or where there is a risk of harm or illegal activity.
Are sessions conducted in person, virtually, or both?
They can be conducted as the client prefers, however, they are usually virtual. If the client prefers in person, Lyon Hill will accommodate that.
When should an organization consider strategic planning?
Organizations should consider strategic planning at several key points in their development. This includes initial stages when direction is still being defined, periods of growth or contraction, leadership transitions, or times when the organization feels misaligned or uncertain about its future.
Strategic planning can also be valuable at milestone moments—such as a significant anniversary, expansion, or major achievement—when leaders want to reflect on past success and define the path forward.
In practice, organizations are always in one of three phases: considering a plan, building a plan, or implementing a plan. The key is to ensure that planning remains active and connected to real decisions.
How do you help ensure the plan is actually implemented?
Implementation ultimately belongs to the organization, but Lyon Hill remains actively involved to support follow-through. We work alongside leaders during the early stages of execution to establish structure, maintain accountability, and ensure the plan is guiding real decisions.
As implementation progresses, our role shifts into an advisory capacity—supporting your ongoing execution, reinforcing discipline, and helping adjust the plan as needed. The goal is not just to create a strategy, but to ensure it is carried forward effectively.
What is fractional leadership?
Fractional leadership provides organizations with experienced executive-level leadership on a part-time, interim, or project basis. It allows companies to access high-level expertise without the need for a full-time executive.
What types of roles can Lyon Hill serve in a fractional capacity?
Lyon Hill can serve in a range of executive-level roles, including Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Administrative Officer, Executive Director, or similar leadership positions.
These engagements are most often within the public sector, nonprofit organizations, and professional service firms—areas where Lyon Hill brings direct experience and a strong understanding of leadership, governance, and operational demands.
When should an organization consider fractional leadership?
These engagements are typically structured to support periods of transition, growth, or specific strategic initiatives—providing leadership, stability, and direction when it is most needed. Furthermore, they are typically expected to last several months unless the organization is seeking a long-term contractual role or filling a position with a very short-term expectation.
